Coach Adjustment Rating (2nd Half)
Pinpointing which coaches win the second half.
Overview
This pillar quantifies a coach's ability to make effective halftime adjustments in the NBA. It identifies teams that consistently outperform their first-half performance, creating opportunities for live trading.
What It Does
The Coach Adjustment Rating measures the change in a team's performance immediately following halftime. It calculates the difference between a team's Net Rating in the 3rd quarter and their Net Rating across the entire first half. A positive rating indicates successful adjustments, while a negative rating suggests the opponent adjusted better.
Why It Matters
Halftime adjustments are a critical, but often unquantified, aspect of basketball. This pillar provides a data-driven edge by revealing which coaches consistently elevate their team's play, offering predictive power for second-half point spreads and live moneyline bets.
How It Works
First, we calculate a team's Net Rating for the first half by subtracting their Defensive Rating from their Offensive Rating. Second, we calculate the Net Rating for the 3rd quarter alone. The adjustment rating is the 3rd quarter Net Rating minus the first-half Net Rating. This score is then tracked as a rolling average over several games to establish a reliable trend.
Methodology
The primary formula is: Adjustment Rating = (3rd Quarter Net Rating) - (1st Half Net Rating). Net Rating is calculated as 100 * (Points Scored / Possessions) - 100 * (Points Allowed / Possessions). The rating is typically aggregated as a 10-game rolling average to identify current coaching effectiveness and smooth out single-game anomalies.
Edge & Advantage
This gives a predictive edge in live betting markets by identifying teams likely to outperform their first-half expectations, creating value against odds that overreact to the first 24 minutes.
