ETF Physical Flow Monitor
Follow the money into physical commodities.
Overview
This pillar tracks daily capital flows into and out of major physical commodity ETFs, such as those for gold (GLD) and oil (USO). It serves as a direct gauge of institutional and retail investor sentiment, providing a powerful leading indicator for commodity price movements.
What It Does
The pillar aggregates daily data on Assets Under Management (AUM), shares outstanding, and physical holdings for key commodity ETFs. It calculates the net capital flow by isolating new investments from price appreciation of the underlying asset. This reveals whether investors are actively buying into or selling out of the physical commodity on a large scale.
Why It Matters
Unlike price charts or sentiment surveys, ETF flows represent real capital being deployed or withdrawn from an asset. A sustained trend of inflows can signal growing conviction and precede a significant price rally, while persistent outflows can warn of an impending price drop.
How It Works
First, daily AUM and share data are collected from ETF issuers and financial data providers. The pillar then calculates net flow by comparing the change in AUM to the change in the ETF's share price. A positive flow indicates new money entered the fund, while a negative flow means money exited. These flows are analyzed over 7 and 30 day periods to identify meaningful trends.
Methodology
Daily net flow is calculated using the formula: Net Flow = (AUM_today - AUM_yesterday) - (AUM_yesterday * Daily_Price_Return). The analysis focuses on the 7-day and 30-day moving averages of these net flows to smooth out daily noise and highlight persistent accumulation or distribution trends. Changes in physical holdings, like tons of gold, are also tracked as a direct confirmation.
Edge & Advantage
This provides a transparent view of market-moving demand, offering a quantifiable signal that often precedes price action driven by news or technicals alone.
