This pillar analyzes the experience level of a college basketball roster by measuring player age and returning production. It identifies teams whose on-court cohesion and veteran presence give them a competitive advantage not always reflected in raw talent rankings.

What It Does

The pillar calculates a composite score based on two key metrics: the percentage of minutes played returning from the previous season and the roster's average age, weighted by projected playing time. This creates a single, comparable 'Experience Factor' for every NCAA Division I team. It systematically quantifies which teams are bringing back a seasoned, familiar core.

Why It Matters

In college basketball, experienced teams often outperform younger, more talented squads, especially in high-pressure games and early in the season. This pillar provides a predictive edge by highlighting teams with the chemistry and poise to overperform expectations and cover spreads.

How It Works

First, the system collects roster data, including each player's academic year and their minutes played in the prior season. It then calculates the percentage of total team minutes from last year that are on the current roster. Next, it computes a weighted average age for the team based on projected minutes. These two values are then combined into a final score.

Methodology

The final score is a weighted average: Score = (Minutes Continuity % * 0.6) + (Normalized Weighted Age * 0.4). Minutes Continuity is the sum of returning players' minutes from season N-1 divided by the team's total minutes in season N-1. Weighted Age is calculated by Σ(Player Age * Projected Minutes) / Σ(Projected Minutes) and then normalized on a 0-100 scale across all teams.
