Faceoff Circle Dominance & Possession Start
Predicting puck possession from the faceoff circle.
Overview
This pillar analyzes how a team's or player's dominance in the faceoff circle translates into puck possession and shot generation. It's particularly valuable for identifying micro-advantages in live trading and player prop markets.
What It Does
The model aggregates player and team faceoff win percentages, applying heavy weights to wins in the offensive zone. It analyzes head-to-head records between opposing centers to pinpoint significant matchup advantages. The output is a score that predicts which team is more likely to gain initial possession and create a scoring chance off the draw.
Why It Matters
A clean faceoff win in the offensive zone can lead to a high-danger scoring chance within seconds. This pillar provides a granular edge by isolating the very start of possession, a critical factor often overlooked in broader models that focus on metrics like Corsi or Fenwick.
How It Works
First, the system pulls recent and season-long faceoff data for all centers in a given matchup. Second, it segments this data by zone (offensive, defensive, neutral) and strength (5v5, PP, PK). It then cross-references the head-to-head history of the primary centers to find exploitable skill gaps. Finally, it generates a 'Possession Start Score' predicting which team will have a significant advantage.
Methodology
The core metric is the Possession Start Score (PSS). PSS = (Team OZFOW% * 1.5) + (Team DZFOW% * 1.0) + (H2H Center Advantage * 2.0). OZFOW% is the Offensive Zone Faceoff Win Percentage over the last 10 games. H2H Center Advantage is the historical win percentage of the starting center against their direct opponent. Clean Win Percentage is used as a secondary tie-breaking factor.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar offers an edge in short-term and live markets by predicting the outcome of the game's most frequent restart, an event that directly precedes scoring chances.
