Motivation & Situational Spots
Find trading edges in team psychology.
Overview
This pillar analyzes a team's schedule to identify situational spots where motivation may be unusually high or low. It helps predict outcomes in games where a team's focus might be compromised, offering an edge over standard statistical models.
What It Does
It systematically scans a team's schedule to flag classic high-variance scenarios. These include 'Letdown' spots after a huge win, 'Lookahead' spots before a major rival, and 'Sandwich' games stuck between two critical matchups. The analysis quantifies the potential psychological impact on team performance.
Why It Matters
Traditional power ratings and stats do not account for a team's mental state. This pillar provides a crucial layer of context, revealing why a superior team might underperform or a weaker team might play above its level, creating value against inefficient trading lines.
How It Works
First, the system ingests a team's full season schedule and opponent rankings. It then identifies marquee games based on rivalry status and ranking disparities. Finally, it flags the games immediately preceding or following these key matchups, assigning a score based on the severity of the situational factor.
Methodology
The model flags a 'Letdown' if the prior opponent was a designated rival or ranked 15+ spots higher, especially after a large margin of victory. A 'Lookahead' is flagged if the next opponent is a key rival or ranked 15+ spots higher. The model also incorporates travel distance and bowl eligibility status (e.g., a 5-win team playing for a bowl bid) as a strong motivational override.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar provides an edge by systematically identifying non-statistical factors that influence game outcomes, allowing for sharper predictions in matchups the market may misprice.
