How It Works

First, the system ingests a team's full season schedule and opponent rankings. It then identifies marquee games based on rivalry status and ranking disparities. Finally, it flags the games immediately preceding or following these key matchups, assigning a score based on the severity of the situational factor.

Methodology

The model flags a 'Letdown' if the prior opponent was a designated rival or ranked 15+ spots higher, especially after a large margin of victory. A 'Lookahead' is flagged if the next opponent is a key rival or ranked 15+ spots higher. The model also incorporates travel distance and bowl eligibility status (e.g., a 5-win team playing for a bowl bid) as a strong motivational override.
