What It Does

The MVP Dependency Rating analyzes on-court and off-court statistics to calculate the change in a team's Net Rating when their star player is on the bench. It identifies the team's most critical player using metrics like Usage Rate and PER, then measures the performance drop-off without them. This provides a clear, data-driven score of the player's true impact.

Why It Matters

This pillar provides a significant edge in live trading scenarios. When a star player gets into foul trouble or is injured, you can instantly quantify the expected impact on the team's performance, allowing for faster, more accurate positions than the market can adjust to.

How It Works

First, the system identifies each team's MVP based on a weighted score of their Usage Rate and Player Efficiency Rating. It then processes play-by-play data to calculate the team's offensive and defensive efficiency with the player on the court versus off the court. The difference in the resulting Net Ratings creates the final dependency score, a single number representing points per 100 possessions.

Methodology

The core calculation is (Team Net Rating with Player ON) minus (Team Net Rating with Player OFF). Net Rating is defined as (Points Scored per 100 Possessions) minus (Points Allowed per 100 Possessions). The analysis uses a rolling window of the last 15 games, with opponent strength adjustments applied to the ratings.
