Playmaker Dependency Rating
Gauging a team's reliance on one star player.
Overview
This pillar measures the percentage of a team's offensive chances created by a single key player. It's crucial for identifying teams that are vulnerable if their star playmaker is injured, suspended, or simply has an off day.
What It Does
The Playmaker Dependency Rating analyzes advanced statistics like Expected Assists (xA) and Key Passes to calculate a single score. This score represents the concentration of creative responsibility on one individual. A high rating signifies a potential single point of failure in a team's attack.
Why It Matters
Teams with high dependency are fragile. This pillar provides a quantifiable measure of that fragility, offering a predictive edge in markets involving match outcomes, goal totals, and player performance, especially when the key player's status is uncertain.
How It Works
First, we aggregate chance creation data, such as Expected Assists and Key Passes, for every player on a team over a rolling window of recent matches. Next, we calculate each player's contribution as a percentage of the team's total. The highest individual percentage becomes the team's official Playmaker Dependency Rating.
Methodology
The rating is calculated as: (Player's Total Expected Assists + Player's Key Passes) / (Team's Total Expected Assists + Team's Total Key Passes) over a rolling 5-match window. The final score is the highest percentage achieved by any single player on the team. A score above 35% indicates high dependency.
Edge & Advantage
It reveals structural weaknesses that are often missed by traditional analysis, providing a clear signal to bet against over-reliant teams when their star is neutralized or absent.
