Protocol Revenue/Fee Valuation
Valuing crypto based on real protocol revenue.
Overview
This pillar analyzes a token's price relative to the fees generated by its underlying protocol. It provides a fundamental valuation metric, similar to a Price-to-Sales (P/S) ratio, to ground predictions in tangible economic activity.
What It Does
The pillar calculates and tracks the Price-to-Sales (P/S) ratio by comparing a token's market capitalization to its annualized protocol revenue. It aggregates on-chain fee data, annualizes it, and presents a clear valuation multiple. This allows for historical analysis and direct comparison against competing protocols.
Why It Matters
In a market driven by narrative and speculation, this pillar provides a concrete, cash-flow-based valuation. It helps traders identify assets whose prices may be disconnected from their actual economic performance, revealing potentially overvalued or undervalued opportunities.
How It Works
First, the system aggregates the total fees paid by users to the protocol over a 30 or 90 day period from on-chain data. Second, this revenue figure is annualized to create a standardized yearly metric. Finally, the token's current market capitalization is divided by this annualized revenue to calculate the P/S ratio.
Methodology
The core formula is P/S Ratio = Market Capitalization / Annualized Protocol Revenue. Annualized revenue is calculated by taking the average daily revenue over a 30-day rolling window and multiplying by 365. Market Capitalization is based on the circulating supply multiplied by the current token price.
Edge & Advantage
This provides an edge by applying a time-tested financial valuation model to the crypto space, allowing you to make decisions based on fundamental strength rather than just market sentiment.
Key Indicators
-
Price-to-Sales (P/S) Ratio
highCompares the token's market capitalization to its annualized revenue, indicating if it's over or undervalued relative to its earnings.
-
Daily Protocol Revenue
highThe total fees generated by the protocol in a 24-hour period, showing its daily economic activity.
-
Fee Growth Rate
mediumThe percentage change in protocol revenue over time (e.g., month-over-month), signaling growth or decline.
Data Sources
-
Provides standardized on-chain financial metrics for crypto protocols, including revenue and P/S ratios.
-
Platform for querying raw blockchain data with SQL to create custom dashboards for protocol fees and usage.
-
An indexing protocol for querying blockchain data, often used to access specific smart contract fee information.
