R&D Team Composition & Cross-Disciplinary Depth
Analyzing the people behind the scientific breakthrough.
Overview
This pillar evaluates the composition and expertise of a research and development team. It assesses the blend of academic credentials, industry experience, and cross-disciplinary collaboration to forecast innovation potential.
What It Does
The analysis creates a 'Talent Density' score for a research team by quantifying individual member credentials, such as publication history and major awards. It also measures the team's structural strength, including the diversity of scientific disciplines represented. This provides a holistic view of the human capital driving a project.
Why It Matters
Scientific and technological progress is driven by people, not just funding. This pillar offers a predictive edge by focusing on the core engine of innovation, the research team itself, which is a leading indicator of a project's potential for success or failure.
How It Works
First, we identify the key personnel of a company or project from public records and publications. Each member is then scored based on their academic impact, industry experience, and notable awards. Finally, these individual scores are aggregated and combined with a diversity index to produce a comprehensive team strength rating.
Methodology
A 'Talent Score' is calculated for key personnel using a weighted average of their h-index, years in a senior role, and significant awards. The team's 'Cross-Disciplinary Index' is calculated using the Shannon diversity formula on the members' primary fields of study. The final pillar score is a weighted combination of the average Talent Score and the Cross-Disciplinary Index.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar provides an advantage by quantifying the human element, offering a signal that often precedes more commonly tracked metrics like patents or press releases.
