It quantifies this 'trap' potential by comparing the strength of the previous, current, and next opponents. The core idea is that teams may be emotionally drained or mentally preparing for the next big game, leading to a lack of focus.

How It Works

First, the system scans an NCAA basketball team's schedule. It then identifies the power ranking of the opponent in the previous game and the upcoming game. If both surrounding opponents are highly ranked and the current opponent is poorly ranked, the game is flagged as a high-potential sandwich spot. A final score is calculated based on the ranking disparity.

Methodology

The 'Sandwich Score' is calculated using opponent KenPom ratings: ((Previous Opponent AdjEM + Next Opponent AdjEM) / 2) - Current Opponent AdjEM. A higher positive score indicates a stronger situational spot. The model flags games where surrounding opponents are top 50 and the current opponent is outside the top 100.
