Sandwich/Look-Ahead Spot Detector

Identify teams walking into a scheduled trap.

58% Historical ATS Cover Rate for Underdogs

Overview

This pillar pinpoints 'sandwich' or 'look-ahead' spots in NCAA basketball schedules, where a strong team faces a weaker opponent between two major games. These situations often lead to underperformance and create value in betting markets, particularly against the spread.

What It Does

The model analyzes a team's full schedule to flag games where a highly ranked team plays a significantly weaker opponent immediately after one tough game and just before another. It quantifies this 'trap' potential by comparing the strength of the previous, current, and next opponents. The core idea is that teams may be emotionally drained or mentally preparing for the next big game, leading to a lack of focus.

Why It Matters

Coaches and players are human, and their focus can waver based on their schedule. This pillar provides a systematic way to identify these psychological letdowns that traditional stats miss. It offers a predictive edge by highlighting undervalued underdogs and overvalued favorites in specific, predictable contexts.

How It Works

First, the system scans an NCAA basketball team's schedule. It then identifies the power ranking of the opponent in the previous game and the upcoming game. If both surrounding opponents are highly ranked and the current opponent is poorly ranked, the game is flagged as a high-potential sandwich spot. A final score is calculated based on the ranking disparity.

Methodology

The 'Sandwich Score' is calculated using opponent KenPom ratings: ((Previous Opponent AdjEM + Next Opponent AdjEM) / 2) - Current Opponent AdjEM. A higher positive score indicates a stronger situational spot. The model flags games where surrounding opponents are top 50 and the current opponent is outside the top 100.

Edge & Advantage

This pillar systematically uncovers situational factors that box scores and power ratings ignore, providing an edge in spread and first-half betting markets where team focus is critical.

Key Indicators

  • Previous Opponent Rank

    high

The KenPom ranking of the team's most recent opponent. A high rank indicates a draining prior game.

  • Next Opponent Rank

    high

The KenPom ranking of the team's next opponent. A high rank suggests the team may be looking ahead.

  • Current Opponent Rank

    high

The KenPom ranking of the current opponent. A low rank can lead to overconfidence and lack of focus.
