Sector Peer Relative Strength
Isolating market leaders from industry followers.
Overview
Analyzes a stock's performance against its direct industry competitors, not just the broad market. This helps identify true market leaders and avoid companies simply riding a sector-wide trend.
What It Does
This pillar constructs a custom 'peer basket' of a company's main competitors and bellwether stocks. It then calculates the target stock's performance relative to this basket, adjusting for sector-wide movements. This isolates the company's unique performance, or 'idiosyncratic alpha'.
Why It Matters
General market indices can be misleading, as a rising tide lifts all boats. This analysis provides a more precise benchmark, revealing if a stock is genuinely outperforming its peers, which is a powerful predictor of future price action.
How It Works
First, we identify a company's sector and select its top 5-10 competitors to form a peer group. Next, we calculate the price return for the target company and the average return for the peer group over a specific lookback period, like 90 days. Finally, we compute a Relative Strength Ratio by dividing the target's return by the peer group's average return, highlighting outperformance.
Methodology
The primary metric is the Peer Relative Strength Ratio (PRSR), calculated as: PRSR = (Stock_Return_90D / Peer_Basket_Avg_Return_90D). The peer basket is an equal-weighted index of the top 5-10 companies by market cap in the same GICS sub-industry. Returns are calculated on a total return basis, including dividends, to ensure accuracy.
Edge & Advantage
This provides an edge by filtering out market noise and sector-wide hype. It allows you to position on the true strongest horse in the race, not just a horse in a fast race.
