Session Lap Load Analysis
Quantifying race readiness through practice session workload.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the total number of laps completed by each driver during free practice sessions. It serves as a key indicator of a team's preparation, car reliability, and confidence heading into qualifying and the race.
What It Does
It aggregates lap counts from all three Free Practice sessions (FP1, FP2, FP3) for every driver on the grid. The pillar then benchmarks this data against the grid average and, crucially, against a driver's own teammate. This comparison helps distinguish between team-wide setup programs and car-specific issues that could impact performance.
Why It Matters
More track time equals more data, better setup refinement, and higher driver comfort. A high lap count is a strong positive signal for a smooth weekend, while a significant deficit often precedes poor qualifying results or in-race reliability problems.
How It Works
First, we collect the final lap counts for each driver from FP1, FP2, and FP3. Second, we sum these laps to create a total 'Weekend Lap Load' score. Third, this score is compared to the median for all drivers and the driver's teammate to generate a relative performance index. Finally, drivers with significantly low lap counts are flagged as high-risk.
Methodology
The core metric is the sum of laps completed across all official practice sessions. This is normalized as a Z-score relative to the grid's mean and standard deviation. A 'Teammate Delta' is calculated as (Driver Laps - Teammate Laps), and a 'Session Disruption' flag is applied if a driver misses more than 33% of any single session.
Edge & Advantage
This provides a leading indicator of potential reliability or setup issues that are not yet priced into the market, offering an edge in DNF or head-to-head driver markets.
Key Indicators
-
Total Practice Laps
highThe sum of all laps completed by a driver across FP1, FP2, and FP3.
-
Teammate Lap Delta
highThe difference in total practice laps between two drivers on the same team.
-
Missed Session Impact
mediumA flag indicating if a driver missed a significant portion of a practice session due to a crash or mechanical failure.
Data Sources
-
Official PDF documents released after each session containing lap counts and timing information.
-
Real-time and historical data from the official Formula 1 website and associated APIs.
-
A data provider that aggregates timing and scoring data across many motorsport series.
