What It Does

The index synthesizes several key defensive metrics into a single score representing a team's shot-blocking prowess. It combines raw blocking volume, the percentage of opponent attempts blocked, and qualitative factors like coaching philosophy. This creates a holistic view of a team's active defensive system.

How It Works

First, we gather data on blocked shots and total opponent shot attempts from the last 10 games for each team. These figures are then normalized to a per-60-minute basis to ensure fair comparison across games with and without overtime. Finally, these quantitative stats are weighted and combined with a score for the team's defensive coaching system to produce the final index value.

Methodology

The index is calculated using a weighted formula: Index = (0.5 * Normalized Blocks Per 60) + (0.4 * Blocked Shot Attempts %) + (0.1 * Coaching System Score). The time window is a 10-game rolling average to capture current team form and strategy. The Coaching System Score is a 1-10 rating based on historical team data and expert analysis of their defensive scheme.
