What It Does

This pillar evaluates every special teams play against a league-average baseline, adjusted for situational factors like field position and weather. It calculates a DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) score for field goals, kickoffs, punts, and returns. A positive DVOA indicates above-average performance, while a negative score signifies below-average efficiency.

Why It Matters

Special teams performance is highly variable and often ignored by the public, creating market inefficiencies. A significant mismatch in special teams DVOA provides a strong predictive edge, especially in games with tight point spreads where field position or a single kick can be decisive.

How It Works

First, the pillar gathers play-by-play data for all special teams plays for the teams involved. Methodology

Special Teams DVOA is calculated by summing the value of all plays, including field goals, extra points, punts, kickoffs, and returns, and dividing by the total number of plays. The value of each play is determined by its outcome relative to a league-average baseline, adjusted for opponent strength and game situation. For example, a 50-yard field goal made is worth more than a 30-yarder, and a punt downed at the 1-yard line is more valuable than a touchback.
