Star Player On/Off Court Net Rating
Quantifying a single player's game-changing impact.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the stark difference in a team's performance when a star player is on the court versus on the bench. It reveals a player's true value beyond box scores, providing a powerful predictive signal for game outcomes.
What It Does
It calculates the team's net rating, which is the point differential per 100 possessions, during two distinct scenarios: when the target player is playing and when they are resting. The core metric is the swing, or the difference between these two net ratings. This isolates the player's direct influence on the team's ability to outscore opponents.
Why It Matters
A large net rating swing indicates the team is highly dependent on that single player to win. This knowledge is critical for predicting outcomes in games where a star's availability or playing time is uncertain, creating a significant edge in live betting and spread markets.
How It Works
First, we gather play-by-play data from recent games to ensure the analysis reflects current team dynamics. We then calculate the team's offensive and defensive rating for all possessions with the player on the court. We repeat this calculation for all possessions with the player on the bench and then subtract the off-court net rating from the on-court net rating to find the final swing value.
Methodology
The primary metric is Net Rating Swing, calculated as (Team Net Rating with Player ON) - (Team Net Rating with Player OFF) per 100 possessions. Data is aggregated over the last 15 games to capture current team form. Net Rating is defined as (Points Scored per 100 Possessions) - (Points Allowed per 100 Possessions).
Edge & Advantage
This pillar exposes team dependencies that box scores hide. It gives a clear advantage in live betting when a star gets into foul trouble or for pre-game analysis if a player's status is questionable.
