Team Discipline & Penalty Tendency
Quantifying on-ice discipline to predict power plays.
Overview
This pillar analyzes a team's tendency to commit penalties against their opponent's ability to draw them. It's valuable for identifying matchups where special teams will likely dictate the game's outcome.
What It Does
It calculates a 'Discipline Mismatch Score' by comparing a team's Penalties in Minutes per Game (PIM/G) and Times Shorthanded against their opponent's rate of drawing fouls. The analysis weighs recent form, using the last 10 games more heavily than season averages, to capture current team tendencies. It also factors in home versus away officiating biases.
Why It Matters
Penalties create power plays, which are the most significant scoring opportunities in hockey. This pillar provides a predictive edge by highlighting games where one team is statistically prone to giving up more power plays, directly impacting goal totals and win probabilities.
How It Works
First, the system gathers season-long and last-10-games penalty data for both teams in a matchup. It then calculates each team's rate of taking penalties and their opponent's rate of drawing them. These rates are combined into a weighted mismatch score that projects which team is more likely to spend time in the penalty box, creating an advantage for the other.
Methodology
The core metric is the Discipline Mismatch Score, calculated as: ((Team A PIM/G_L10 * 0.6 + Team A PIM/G_Season * 0.4) + (Team B PPOF/G_L10 * 0.6 + Team B PPOF/G_Season * 0.4)). PIM/G is Penalties in Minutes per Game; PPOF/G is Power Play Opportunities For per Game. A higher score indicates a higher likelihood of Team A taking penalties.
Edge & Advantage
This provides a quantifiable edge over markets that may overvalue 5-on-5 play and underestimate the impact of a significant special teams mismatch.
