Team Momentum & Confidence
Quantifying team morale and winning streaks.
Overview
This pillar analyzes a team's collective momentum and confidence based on recent performance. It's especially valuable in team-based tournaments like the Chess Olympiad where psychological factors can sway tight matches.
What It Does
It calculates a composite score by tracking round-by-round results against rating expectations. The model heavily weights upset victories against stronger opponents and penalizes unexpected losses. It also considers the performance of key players on top boards to gauge the team's overall form.
Why It Matters
Standard Elo ratings are static and do not capture short-term psychological trends. This pillar provides a dynamic view of a team's current form and morale, offering a predictive edge in matches that look even on paper.
How It Works
First, we gather individual results from the last three tournament rounds for each player on a team. We then calculate a 'Performance vs. Expectation' score based on Elo differences for each game. These scores are weighted by board number and recency, then aggregated into a single Team Momentum Score that signals their current competitive form.
Methodology
The core metric is the Team Momentum Score (TMS), calculated on a rolling 3-round basis. TMS = Σ (Player_PRvE * Board_Weight * Recency_Weight). Player_PRvE (Performance Rating vs Expectation) = (Actual_Points - Expected_Points_Elo) with a +0.2 bonus for upset wins (>100 Elo difference). Board_Weight: Board 1=1.5, Board 2=1.2, others=1.0. Recency_Weight: Last round=1.5, Round-2=1.0, Round-3=0.75.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar identifies overperforming or underperforming teams whose current form is not yet reflected in their static FIDE ratings, revealing valuable betting opportunities.
