Team Momentum & Form Streams
Quantifying the hot hand in sports.
Overview
This pillar analyzes a team's recent performance, moving beyond simple win-loss records to measure momentum and confidence. It identifies teams that are over or underperforming their season average, providing a crucial edge in event-based markets.
What It Does
It aggregates game-by-game results from the last 5-10 matches, weighting recent outcomes more heavily. The pillar calculates key metrics like margin of victory, performance against the spread, and scoring differentials to create a composite momentum score. This score is then compared against a team's baseline statistics to reveal short-term performance trends.
Why It Matters
Momentum is a powerful, often unquantified force in sports that reflects team psychology and form. This pillar turns that abstract concept into a concrete number, allowing you to spot teams on a hot streak before the market fully prices it in, or identify slumping teams that are overvalued.
How It Works
First, the system collects recent match results, including final scores and betting spreads. It then calculates performance indicators for each match, such as the margin of victory and cover margin. These indicators are assigned a time-decay weight, with the most recent game receiving the highest value, and then combined into a single momentum score.
Methodology
The core is a time-weighted momentum score calculated over a 5-game rolling window. Momentum Score = Σ(wi * (MoVi / SeasonAvgMoV)) where 'wi' is an exponential decay weight (e.g., 1.0, 0.8, 0.6, 0.4, 0.2), 'MoVi' is the Margin of Victory for game 'i', and 'SeasonAvgMoV' is the team's average margin of victory for the season. A score above 1.0 indicates positive momentum.
Edge & Advantage
It provides a dynamic view of team performance that static power rankings and ELO systems miss, capturing the psychological 'hot hand' effect for a predictive edge.
