Pickleball is a game of runs, where psychological momentum can be more impactful than overall skill for short periods. This pillar provides a quantifiable measure of this 'hot hand' effect, offering an edge over traditional stats that may not capture the current flow of the game.

How It Works

The system ingests live or recent play-by-play data for a pickleball match. It then identifies every instance of a team scoring consecutive points while serving. Key metrics like average streak length and frequency of 3+ point runs are calculated and weighted. Finally, these are combined into a single momentum rating for each team, updated after each point.

Methodology

The core Momentum Rating is a weighted score: (0.5 * Avg Streak Length) + (0.3 * Frequency of 3+ Point Streaks) + (0.2 * Points Per Side-Out). This score is calculated over a rolling window of the last 2 games or the current game's data. The rating is normalized to a 0-100 scale for easy comparison between teams.
