Team Momentum & Streak Analysis
Quantifying the psychological edge of team momentum.
Overview
This pillar analyzes winning and losing streaks to gauge a team's current form and confidence. It provides a crucial signal on how a team's recent performance impacts their odds in an upcoming match.
What It Does
It aggregates recent match results to calculate a weighted Momentum Score for each team. The analysis considers not just wins and losses, but also the margin of victory and the quality of opponents faced. This creates a more nuanced view of a team's form than a simple win/loss record.
Why It Matters
Momentum is a powerful, often unquantified, factor in sports. Teams on a 'hot streak' frequently outperform their baseline stats due to higher confidence, offering a predictive edge that standard models can miss.
How It Works
The system first ingests the last 5-10 match results for a team. It then assigns a score to each match, weighting recent games more heavily and adjusting for victory margins. Finally, it factors in the official ranking of the opponents to produce a comparable momentum rating.
Methodology
A Momentum Score is calculated using an exponentially weighted moving average of the last 5 matches. The formula is: Score = Σ(Result * MarginMultiplier * RecencyWeight). Result is +1 for a win, -1 for a loss. MarginMultiplier is a function of Net Run Rate (cricket). RecencyWeight decreases for older matches.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar captures the 'hot hand' phenomenon, providing a data-driven look at team psychology and form that is often overlooked in purely statistical matchups.
