Travel Fatigue & Time Zone Shift
Analyzing the hidden opponent: jet lag.
Overview
This pillar quantifies the physical toll of long-distance travel and time zone changes on fighters. It is valuable for predicting upsets, as the market often underestimates how much travel fatigue impacts performance.
What It Does
The pillar analyzes a fighter's travel itinerary in the two weeks preceding a fight. It calculates the total distance traveled, the number of time zones crossed, and the acclimatization period at the fight location. These factors are weighted to produce a 'Travel Fatigue Score' that indicates potential performance degradation.
Why It Matters
Significant travel disrupts circadian rhythms, which can impair reaction time, endurance, and strength. This pillar provides a data-driven measure of this disadvantage, offering a predictive edge in fights where one competitor has a much more strenuous travel schedule.
How It Works
First, the pillar identifies a fighter's primary training camp location and the event venue. It then calculates the flight distance and the net time zone shift between these two points. Finally, it combines these metrics with the number of days the fighter has had to acclimate, generating a fatigue score for each fighter in a matchup.
Methodology
A Travel Fatigue Score (TFS) is calculated for each fighter using the formula: TFS = (Absolute Time Zones Crossed * 4) + (Travel Distance in km / 1000) - (Acclimatization Days * 3). The analysis considers all major travel within 14 days of the fight. A higher score indicates greater fatigue.
Edge & Advantage
The betting market focuses on fight record and style, often underpricing the severe physiological impact of cross-continental travel. This pillar isolates a real, physical disadvantage that others miss.
Key Indicators
-
Time Zone Shift
highThe absolute number of time zones crossed from primary training camp to fight venue.
-
Acclimatization Period
highNumber of full days the fighter is present in the new time zone before the fight.
-
Travel Distance
mediumThe total flight distance in kilometers for the final leg of travel to the event city.
Data Sources
-
Fighter Social Media & Interviews
Provides primary data on training camp locations and arrival times at the event location.
-
Reports on fighter camps, travel plans, and event logistics.
-
Used to calculate the core metrics of time shifts and travel distances between locations.
Example Questions This Pillar Answers
- → Will a fighter traveling from Dagestan to Las Vegas win their bout?
- → Will the fighter with less than 5 days of acclimatization win by decision?
- → Will the fighter who crossed more than 8 time zones be knocked out?
