Travel Logistics & Time Zone Fatigue

Quantifying the hidden impact of travel fatigue.

-12% Spread Cover Rate vs. Jet Lag

Overview

This pillar analyzes the physical toll of team travel, including distance, time zones crossed, and rest periods, to predict performance dips. It provides an edge by identifying physiologically disadvantaged teams that traditional stats might miss.

What It Does

The pillar calculates a proprietary 'Travel Fatigue Index' for each team before a game. It ingests official schedules, estimates flight paths to calculate miles traveled, and quantifies the circadian disruption from crossing time zones. The analysis also factors in the direction of travel, as eastward journeys are typically more taxing on the body.

Why It Matters

Fatigue is a significant, yet often underpriced, factor in sports outcomes. Teams with high travel fatigue are more prone to slow starts, sloppy execution, and late-game collapses, creating valuable betting opportunities against the spread or on under totals.

How It Works

First, the system identifies a team's previous and upcoming game locations from league schedules. It then calculates the shortest flight distance and the number of time zones crossed. These inputs, along with rest days, are fed into a weighted formula to generate a comparable fatigue score for both teams in a matchup.

Methodology

The Travel Fatigue Index (TFI) is calculated as: TFI = ((Miles / 1000) * 0.6) + ((Timezones * 1.5) * Direction_Multiplier) - (Rest_Days * 2.5). The Direction_Multiplier is 1.3 for eastward travel and 0.9 for westward travel. Analysis is focused on travel occurring within the 7 days prior to a game.

Edge & Advantage

This pillar provides a data-driven edge by systematically pricing in a physical factor that most bettors only consider anecdotally, leading to better-informed wagers.

Key Indicators

  • Time Zones Crossed

    high

The number of time zones a team travels across; a primary driver of circadian rhythm disruption.

  • Direction of Travel

    high

Indicates whether travel was East-to-West or West-to-East, with eastward travel having a greater negative impact.

  • Miles Traveled

    medium

The total distance covered during the most recent trip, contributing to general physical weariness.

  • Rest Days

    medium

The number of full days a team has between arriving at the destination and playing the game.

Data Sources

  • Provides game dates, times, and locations for major sports leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL).

  • Flight & Distance APIs

Calculates great-circle distance between city pairs to estimate travel mileage.

  • Time Zone Databases

Provides time zone information for various geographic locations to calculate shifts.

Example Questions This Pillar Answers

  • Will the LA Lakers cover the -5.5 spread against the NY Knicks after flying cross-country on 1 day of rest?
  • Will the Seattle Seahawks score over or under 10.5 points in the first half of their game in Miami?
  • Will a European team win the League of Legends World Championship held in North America?
