What It Does

It then calculates the first derivative (velocity) to measure how fast the conversation is growing, and the second derivative (acceleration) to see if that growth is speeding up. How It Works

First, the system aggregates mentions for a target entity across sources like Twitter and Reddit over rolling time windows. Next, it calculates the rate of change in mention volume to determine the 'velocity'. Finally, it calculates the rate of change of that velocity to find the 'acceleration', flagging narratives that are picking up speed exponentially.

Methodology

Mention volume is tracked in 1-hour intervals. Velocity is calculated as (Mentions_t - Mentions_{t-1}) / 1 hour. Acceleration is (Velocity_t - Velocity_{t-1}) / 1 hour. Values are normalized using a Z-score against a 30-day rolling average to enable comparison across different narratives.
