Whale Accumulation vs. Distribution Index
Follow the smart money, anticipate market moves.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the net buying and selling behavior of the largest crypto holders, known as whales. Tracking their activity provides a powerful leading indicator for potential price trends, as their large transactions can significantly influence market direction.
What It Does
The index identifies wallets holding over 0.1% of a cryptocurrency's circulating supply, excluding known exchange wallets. It then calculates the net change in their collective holdings over a rolling 7-day period. A positive value indicates accumulation (buying), while a negative value signifies distribution (selling).
Why It Matters
Whales often have access to better information and can move markets with their capital. By monitoring whether this influential group is accumulating or distributing an asset, you can gain an edge in predicting medium-term price action before it's reflected in the broader market.
How It Works
First, we identify all non-exchange wallets meeting the 'whale' threshold for a specific asset. Next, we monitor the inflows and outflows for this cohort of wallets daily. Finally, we compute a 7-day rolling sum of the net position change to create a smooth index that shows the prevailing trend of accumulation or distribution.
Methodology
The index is calculated as the sum of daily net position changes for all identified whale wallets over the past 7 days. A whale wallet is defined as a single address holding >0.1% of the current circulating supply. Known exchange, DeFi protocol, and custodian wallets are filtered out to focus on individual or institutional sentiment.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar provides a direct view into the actions of the most influential market participants, offering a signal that often precedes price movements driven by retail traders.
