Coinbase Premium Index
Tracking the pulse of US institutional crypto demand.
Overview
The Coinbase Premium Index measures the price difference for major cryptocurrencies between Coinbase and Binance. This gap serves as a powerful proxy for US-based institutional and retail buying pressure, often signaling future market movements.
What It Does
This pillar continuously monitors the price of a target asset, like Bitcoin, on Coinbase's USD market and Binance's USDT market. It calculates the percentage difference, known as the premium or discount. A positive premium indicates that US buyers are paying more, suggesting strong demand, while a discount signals weaker interest or selling pressure.
Why It Matters
The US market, particularly institutional players using regulated exchanges like Coinbase, is a major driver of crypto prices. A sustained premium often precedes broader market rallies by several hours, providing a valuable leading indicator for short to medium-term price action.
How It Works
First, the system fetches the real-time spot price for a crypto asset from the Coinbase Pro API (e.g., BTC-USD). Simultaneously, it fetches the price for the same asset from the Binance API (e.g., BTC-USDT). The premium is then calculated as the percentage difference between the two prices, and this value is tracked over time to identify meaningful trends.
Methodology
The index is calculated using the formula: Premium % = ((Coinbase_Price_USD / Binance_Price_USDT) - 1) * 100. Data is sampled every minute. A 7-period and 30-period moving average are applied to the raw premium to identify short-term momentum and underlying trends.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar offers a direct view into the sentiment of a key market-moving demographic, institutional US investors, before their impact is fully reflected in global prices.
