Defensive Depth & Pairing Stability
Analyzing the defensive depth that wins championships.
Overview
This pillar assesses the stability and performance of a hockey team's defensive corps, focusing on the second and third pairings. It identifies hidden weaknesses that often lead to goals against, providing a key signal for game total and live trading markets.
What It Does
It moves beyond star players to quantify the reliability of a team's entire blueline. The pillar analyzes on-ice defensive metrics, turnover rates, and the minutes played by less-skilled replacement players. This data is synthesized into a single stability score that highlights teams vulnerable to sustained offensive pressure.
Why It Matters
Games are often won or lost by the performance of non-elite players. This pillar provides a predictive edge by spotting teams with a fragile defense that is likely to concede goals, especially when their top players are off the ice or when facing injuries.
How It Works
First, the pillar identifies a team's current second and third defensive pairings from recent game logs. It then aggregates advanced metrics like Expected Goals Against and turnover rates for these specific pairings. Finally, it adjusts the score based on injuries and the ice time given to replacement-level defensemen to produce a final defensive liability rating.
Methodology
The core calculation is a weighted average of Expected Goals Against per 60 minutes (xGA/60) for the 2nd and 3rd defensive pairings over the last 10 games, weighted by Time on Ice percentage. This is then modified by a penalty factor for high defensive-zone turnover rates. A final 'Replacement Burden' score is added, calculated from the total ice time of defensemen with a Corsi For percentage below 45%.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar offers an edge by quantifying the risk from a team's depth defenders, a factor most casual bettors overlook while focusing on goaltending and star forwards.
