Defensive Scheme Vulnerability (TE/Slot)
Pinpointing mismatches against TEs and slot receivers.
Overview
This pillar analyzes NFL defensive schemes to identify specific vulnerabilities against tight ends and slot receivers. It moves beyond generic team rankings to find exploitable matchups for player proposition markets.
What It Does
It deconstructs a defense's tendencies, focusing on how frequently they use schemes like Cover 2 or Cover 3 that create soft spots in the middle of the field. The pillar then cross-references this with the opposing offense's personnel, identifying when an elite TE or slot WR is poised to exploit a linebacker or safety in coverage. This produces a vulnerability score for specific player props.
Why It Matters
General defensive stats can be misleading. This analysis provides a predictive edge by highlighting specific, recurring schematic flaws that lead to high-volume passing games for interior receivers. It helps you position on the matchup, not just the team's reputation.
How It Works
First, the pillar aggregates defensive formation and coverage scheme data from the last four games for a given team. Second, it analyzes opposing TE and slot WR performance against those specific schemes, measuring stats like target rate and yards per route run. Finally, it generates a mismatch score by comparing the defense's vulnerability to the specific strengths of the upcoming opponent's players.
Methodology
Analysis is based on a rolling 4-game window to weigh recent performance. It calculates a Mismatch Score using a weighted average of: DVOA vs. TE/Slot WRs (40%), PFF Coverage Grades for relevant LBs and Safeties (30%), and Yards Per Route Run allowed to the specific position (30%). A team's high usage rate of a vulnerable scheme (e.g., Cover 2 vs. a seam-stretching TE) significantly boosts the score.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar provides an edge by quantifying specific player vs. scheme matchups that broad 'Defense vs. Position' rankings completely ignore.
Key Indicators
-
DVOA vs. TE
highDefense-adjusted Value Over Average against opposing tight ends, indicating overall efficiency.
-
Slot Coverage Grade
highPerformance grade for primary slot defenders, identifying weak links in the secondary.
-
LB/Safety Mismatch Pct.
mediumPercentage of pass plays where a TE or slot WR is covered by a linebacker or safety with a poor coverage grade.
Data Sources
-
Provides individual player grades, including coverage grades, and defensive scheme usage data.

The primary source for DVOA statistics, broken down by position.
-
Offers player tracking data which can inform route concepts and coverage assignments.
