Depth Chart Thinning Cascade
Gauging team weakness from compounding injuries.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the cumulative impact of multiple injuries within a single position group, like guards in college basketball. It identifies situations where a team's performance capability is significantly degraded beyond what the market prices in for a single star player's absence.
What It Does
The model first establishes a baseline depth chart and player value for each team's key positions. It then monitors real-time injury news to detect when multiple players in the same group are out. The pillar quantifies this 'thinning' effect, calculating the projected drop-off in team efficiency, ball handling, and defensive stability.
Why It Matters
Markets are quick to adjust for a star player's injury but are slower to price in the domino effect of losing their primary backup too. This pillar finds an edge by pinpointing teams in a 'depth crisis', whose on-court performance is likely to be much worse than public perception suggests.
How It Works
First, the system ingests baseline player stats and depth chart rankings before a game. As injury news breaks, it updates the active roster and identifies the position group most affected. It then calculates a 'Cascade Score' based on the experience and stats of the replacement players, heavily penalizing teams forced to use inexperienced players or shift others out of position. This score translates directly to a recommended adjustment for point spreads and game totals.
Methodology
The core metric is the Positional Value Over Replacement (PVOR) drop-off. For a given position group, the PVOR of the top 3 active players is calculated. When an injury occurs, the model replaces that player's PVOR with the next man up. A 1.3x penalty multiplier is applied to the PVOR loss for each subsequent injury in the same group, modeling the non-linear degradation of performance.
Edge & Advantage
It provides a quantitative edge by modeling the exponential, not linear, performance decline from stacked injuries at one position, a nuance often missed by standard analysis.
