DEX vs CEX Volume Ratio
Tracking the flow of capital between centralized and decentralized crypto exchanges.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the ratio of trading volume on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) versus centralized exchanges (CEXs). It provides a crucial signal about market sentiment, risk appetite, and the underlying structural shifts within the crypto ecosystem.
What It Does
The pillar aggregates daily spot trading volume from the top DEXs and CEXs to compute a direct ratio. It then tracks this ratio's moving average to identify significant trends. A rising ratio indicates a growing preference for self-custody and DeFi, while a falling ratio can signal a flight to perceived safety or institutional dominance.
Why It Matters
This ratio acts as a barometer for crypto-native sentiment. It can reveal a shift towards risk-on 'DeFi summer' conditions before it's fully reflected in asset prices, giving traders an edge in spotting sector rotations.
How It Works
First, daily spot trading volumes are collected from the top 10 CEXs and top 10 DEXs. Next, a 7-day moving average is calculated for both datasets to smooth out daily noise. The DEX moving average is then divided by the CEX moving average to produce the core ratio. This final number is plotted over time to reveal emerging trends in capital flow.
Methodology
The primary calculation is (7-Day Moving Average of Top 10 DEX Spot Volumes) / (7-Day Moving Average of Top 10 CEX Spot Volumes). DEXs are selected based on Total Value Locked (TVL) and CEXs by trusted volume scores. Data is aggregated daily at 00:00 UTC.
Edge & Advantage
It offers a pure signal on capital rotation and user behavior, often leading price action by highlighting where the most active traders are moving their money.
Key Indicators

DEX/CEX Volume Ratio
highThe core metric comparing total DEX volume to total CEX volume. A higher number signals stronger DeFi sentiment.
-
Uniswap vs. Coinbase Volume
mediumA direct comparison between the leading DEX and a leading CEX, often used as a proxy for the broader trend.
-
DEX Aggregator Market Share
lowThe percentage of DEX volume routed through aggregators like 1inch. Indicates the sophistication of DEX traders.
Data Sources
-
Provides comprehensive, multi-chain data on DEX trading volumes.
-
Offers trading volume data for hundreds of centralized exchanges with trust scores.
-
Often publishes pre-calculated charts and analysis on the DEX to CEX volume ratio.
