Elite Endorsement Cascade & Surrogate Value
Quantifying the influence of political kingmakers.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the predictive power of endorsements from elite political figures like former presidents, popular governors, and party leaders. It's valuable for identifying candidates who are gaining institutional support and momentum before it's fully reflected in the polls.
What It Does
It goes beyond a simple tally of endorsements by assigning an 'Influence Score' to each endorser based on their current approval ratings, media reach, and historical success. The pillar then tracks the timing and velocity of these high-quality endorsements, creating a momentum score for each candidate in a primary race.
Why It Matters
Elite endorsements often act as a powerful signal to donors, voters, and media, shaping the narrative of a campaign. This pillar provides a leading indicator of a candidate's viability and potential to consolidate support, offering an edge before market odds fully adjust.
How It Works
First, we identify a list of 'elite surrogates' for the current election cycle. Each surrogate is assigned an Influence Score. As endorsements are made, we calculate a time-decaying 'Endorsement Momentum Score' for each candidate, giving more weight to recent, high-influence endorsements. This score is then correlated with polling shifts and market probability changes.
Methodology
The core metric is the Endorsement Momentum Score (EMS), calculated as a time-decaying sum of Influence Scores (IS) for each candidate. The IS for an endorser is a weighted average of their approval rating, national media mentions, and past endorsement success rate. The EMS formula is: EMS_t = Σ (IS_i * e^(-λ * (t - t_i))), where t_i is the time of endorsement i and λ is a decay constant with a 14-day half-life.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar provides an edge by quantifying the quality and timing of endorsements, not just the raw count, revealing underlying shifts in party support before they become common knowledge.
