Erne/ATP Threat Level
Quantifying high-skill shots that change pickleball matches.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the frequency and success of advanced, aggressive shots like the Erne and Around-the-Post (ATP). It provides a unique measure of a player's offensive pressure and ability to create game-changing moments.
What It Does
The Erne/ATP Threat Level tracks how often a player attempts these two high-risk, high-reward shots. It evaluates not just the volume but the success rate to build a profile of a player's offensive toolkit. This analysis goes beyond simple win-loss records to measure a player's capacity to demoralize opponents and control the net.
Why It Matters
These shots are momentum shifters. A successful Erne or ATP can disrupt an opponent's rhythm and create a significant psychological advantage. This pillar helps predict which players are more likely to break open a tight game or mount a comeback through superior skill.
How It Works
First, we analyze play-by-play data or match footage from a player's recent tournaments. We log every attempt of an Erne or ATP shot and its outcome. These attempts are then calculated as a rate per game to normalize for match length. Finally, success rates are weighted to generate a single Threat Level score.
Methodology
The Threat Level is calculated per player over their last 5 sanctioned matches. The formula is: `Threat Level = ((Total Successful Ernes / Total Games Played) * 1.5) + ((Total Successful ATPs / Total Games Played) * 1.2)`. The weights reflect the higher difficulty and impact of the Erne compared to the ATP.
Edge & Advantage
This provides an edge by isolating key offensive plays that traditional sports stats overlook. It identifies players who possess the modern, aggressive style required to win at the highest levels.
