Exchange Net Flow Momentum

Track crypto supply shifts on exchanges.

48hr Typical Signal Lead Time

Overview

This pillar analyzes the net flow of cryptocurrencies to and from centralized exchanges. It provides a powerful leading indicator of potential selling or buying pressure before it is reflected in the market price.

What It Does

The pillar aggregates on-chain transaction data, distinguishing between wallets belonging to major exchanges and private wallets. It calculates the total volume of a specific asset moving into exchanges (potential sell pressure) versus moving out (potential holding sentiment). The pillar then measures the rate of change, or momentum, of this net flow to identify accelerating trends.

Why It Matters

A sustained increase in exchange inflows often precedes price drops, as holders move assets to sell. Conversely, a surge in outflows suggests accumulation and can lead to a supply shock, driving prices up. This provides a direct view into the supply and demand dynamics of the market.

How It Works

First, the system identifies and tracks the wallet addresses of all major centralized exchanges. It monitors all incoming and outgoing transactions for a specific crypto asset daily. The net flow is calculated by subtracting total outflows from total inflows. Finally, a 7-day moving average is applied to this net flow data to smooth out noise and reveal the underlying momentum.

Methodology

The core calculation is the 7-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the daily Net Transfer Volume (Inflows - Outflows) in USD. Momentum is defined as the slope of this 7-day SMA. A positive and steepening slope indicates strong bearish momentum, while a negative and steepening slope signifies strong bullish momentum.

Edge & Advantage

This pillar offers an edge by revealing the actions of large market participants before they impact order books, providing a signal that is independent of price chart analysis.

Key Indicators

  • Net Transfer Volume

    high

The net amount of an asset moving into or out of exchange wallets. A positive value indicates more inflows than outflows.

  • Exchange Balance Change

    high

The 24-hour change in the total amount of an asset held in all exchange wallets.

  • Inflow/Outflow Ratio

    medium

The ratio of coins entering exchanges versus those leaving, which contextualizes the scale of market activity.

Data Sources

  • Leading on-chain intelligence platform providing granular data on exchange flows and balances.

  • On-chain data provider focused on metrics for traders, including exchange flow data.

  • Blockchain analytics platform that labels and tracks wallets, including those of major exchanges.

Example Questions This Pillar Answers

  • Will Bitcoin's price be above $70,000 on August 1st?
  • Will net exchange flows for Ethereum be negative for the upcoming week?
  • Will the total balance of stablecoins on exchanges increase by more than 2% this month?
