Why It Matters

Winning a key faceoff provides instant puck possession, which is a primary driver of offensive pressure and defensive stability. A team with a dominant faceoff center is more likely to control the game's early tempo, leading to more shots and a higher probability of scoring first.

How It Works

First, the system identifies the projected starting centers for a given hockey game. It then retrieves their faceoff win percentages over the last 15 games, segmenting the data by zone (offensive, defensive, neutral). A differential score is calculated, highlighting any significant mismatch, particularly when a strong offensive faceoff taker meets a weak defensive one.

Methodology

The core calculation is the Zoned Mismatch Score (ZMS). ZMS = (Center A O-Zone FO% - Center B D-Zone FO%) * 1.5. A positive score above 10 indicates a significant advantage for Team A's offense.
