Free Throw Rate vs. Aggression

Exploiting the foul line for an edge.

+4.2 Projected Points from Mismatch

Overview

Analyzes the crucial matchup between a team's defensive aggression and an opponent's ability to draw fouls. This pillar identifies hidden scoring potential from the free-throw line, which is often overlooked in standard game analysis.

What It Does

This pillar quantifies the potential for 'easy points' by comparing two key metrics: a team's Free Throw Attempt Rate and their opponent's Personal Foul Rate. It calculates a 'Foul Mismatch Score' to highlight games where one team is highly likely to gain a significant advantage at the charity stripe. This helps predict deviations from expected scoring totals.

Why It Matters

Free throws are a significant, yet volatile, source of points that can swing game totals and player props. By identifying mismatches in foul tendencies, this pillar provides a predictive edge over models that only focus on shooting percentages and pace.

How It Works

First, we calculate each NBA team's rolling 15-game average for Free Throw Attempt Rate (FTr) on offense. Second, we calculate their defensive foul rate, or how many free throws they concede. Third, we compare the offensive FTr of one team against the defensive foul rate of their upcoming opponent to generate a mismatch score. A high positive score indicates a strong likelihood of that team generating extra points from fouls.

Methodology

The core calculation is the Foul Mismatch Score. It's derived using FTr (Free Throws Attempted / Field Goals Attempted) and Opponent FTr. Mismatch Score = (Team A Offensive FTr - League Average FTr) + (Team B Opponent FTr - League Average FTr). This score is then translated into a projected point differential based on league average free throw percentage.

Edge & Advantage

This pillar uncovers a hidden point source that directly impacts game totals, moving beyond surface-level stats like points per game or 3-point percentage.

  • Foul Mismatch Score

    medium

A composite score quantifying the disparity between one team's ability to draw fouls and another's tendency to commit them.
