Geopolitical Disruption Index
Quantifying conflict risk at global chokepoints.
Overview
This pillar assesses the risk of supply chain disruptions for key commodities, like oil and gas, due to geopolitical tensions at critical maritime chokepoints. It provides an early warning signal for price volatility in energy and shipping markets.
What It Does
The pillar aggregates data on military activity, political rhetoric, and incident reports near major shipping lanes such as the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal, and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. It synthesizes these diverse signals into a single, actionable index score representing the current level of disruption risk to global commodity flows.
Why It Matters
This provides a forward-looking measure of potential supply shocks that are not yet fully priced into the market. It helps traders anticipate sudden price spikes in commodities like crude oil and LNG before they become headline news.
How It Works
First, the system monitors real-time news feeds and government advisories for keywords related to conflict and shipping in designated zones. Second, it tracks changes in war risk insurance premiums quoted for tankers transiting these areas. Finally, it combines these qualitative and quantitative signals into a weighted index from 0 to 100, where higher values indicate greater risk.
Methodology
The index is a weighted average of three components: Political Tension Score (40%), Incident Frequency Score (40%), and Insurance Premium Score (20%). The Political Tension Score is derived from sentiment analysis of official statements. The Incident Frequency Score is a 14-day rolling count of reported hostile acts. The Insurance Premium Score tracks the percentage change in war risk premiums.
Edge & Advantage
It systematically quantifies a traditionally qualitative risk, providing a consistent signal that cuts through media noise and emotional market reactions.
