Head-to-Head Polling & Debate Matchups
Gauging electability beyond the primary noise.
Overview
This pillar analyzes direct candidate matchups through head-to-head polling and debate performance. It's valuable for determining a candidate's perceived strength in a general election, a key driver of primary voter behavior.
What It Does
It aggregates polling data that specifically pits one candidate against another in a hypothetical general election. The pillar also quantifies debate outcomes by analyzing post-debate snap polls and shifts in voter sentiment. This creates a comparative strength score between potential nominees.
Why It Matters
Primary voters often select the candidate they believe is most likely to win the final race. This pillar provides a data-driven look at that 'electability' factor, offering a predictive edge over analyses that only consider primary polling.
How It Works
The system continuously scans and aggregates head-to-head polls from A-rated pollsters for specific candidate pairings. After major debates, it ingests snap poll results to measure performance. These two data streams are then weighted and combined to produce a Matchup Viability Score for each candidate dyad.
Methodology
The core metric is a 30-day rolling average of head-to-head poll margins from pollsters rated B or higher by FiveThirtyEight. Debate impact is calculated as the net percentage point change in post-debate snap polls (e.g., YouGov, Ipsos) from a candidate's pre-debate polling baseline. The final score is a 70/30 weighted average of the polling margin and debate impact.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar provides a forward-looking signal on general election viability, which is a powerful, often overlooked, driver of primary election outcomes.
