Historical Head-to-Head Trend
Using past rivalries to predict future wins.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the direct head-to-head history between two NHL teams over the last three years. It provides a foundational view of which team has historically held an edge in the matchup, independent of current season performance.
What It Does
It aggregates all game results between two specific franchises over a 3-year window. The analysis calculates the win-loss record, average margin of victory, and trends related to the total goals scored (over/under). This reveals deep-seated matchup dynamics and historical dominance patterns.
Why It Matters
Some teams consistently outperform or underperform against specific opponents due to playing style, historical rivalries, or psychological factors. This pillar uncovers those trends, providing an edge that recency-based analysis might miss.
How It Works
First, the system identifies the two teams in an upcoming game. It then queries a historical database for all matchups between them in the last three seasons. Finally, it computes key statistics like win percentage, average goals for and against, and the over/under hit rate for their past encounters.
Methodology
The analysis uses a rolling 3-year time window from the date of the upcoming game. Key calculations include: H2H Win % = (Team Wins / Total Games Played) * 100. Average Goal Differential = (Sum of Team Goals - Sum of Opponent Goals) / Total Games Played. Over/Under Hit Rate = (Games Exceeding Total Line / Total Games with Line) * 100.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar provides a crucial check against recency bias, highlighting long-term matchup dominance that often persists regardless of current team form.
