Issue Salience & Advantage
Tracking the key issues that decide elections.
Overview
Analyzes which issues voters care about most and which candidate they trust to handle them. This pillar moves beyond simple horse-race polling to reveal the underlying narrative driving voter choice.
What It Does
This pillar aggregates two types of polling data: 'most important problem' surveys to identify issue salience, and 'candidate trust' polls to measure perceived leadership on those specific issues. It then synthesizes this data into a single 'Issue Advantage Score'. This score quantifies which candidate currently owns the narrative on the topics that matter most to the electorate, particularly in crucial swing states.
Why It Matters
Elections are often won or lost based on which candidate's core message resonates with the top concerns of voters. This pillar provides a leading indicator of campaign effectiveness and can signal shifts in voter sentiment before they appear in head-to-head polling.
How It Works
First, we identify the top three most salient issues from aggregated 'Most Important Problem' polls over a 30-day window. Next, we find corresponding polling data on which candidate voters trust more on each of those issues. We then calculate a weighted score by multiplying an issue's salience by the candidate's trust margin. The final output is a net score indicating the overall issue advantage.
Methodology
The Issue Advantage Score (IAS) is calculated as: IAS = Σ (Salience_i * TrustMargin_i) for the top 'i' issues. Salience is the percentage of voters citing an issue as their top concern. TrustMargin is the percentage point lead a candidate holds in polls asking 'Who do you trust more to handle this issue?'. The analysis uses a 30-day rolling average of polls from reputable, non-partisan sources to smooth out noise.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar offers a deeper, qualitative insight than topline polls, helping you anticipate which campaign's attacks or messaging will land most effectively.
