IV Rank/Percentile Context
Gauging if market fear is currently cheap or expensive.
Overview
This pillar analyzes an asset's current Implied Volatility (IV) relative to its own 52-week history. It provides critical context to determine if options are overvalued (high IV) or undervalued (low IV), signaling potential trading opportunities.
What It Does
It calculates where the current Implied Volatility of an asset stands in relation to its historical range, typically over the past year. Using metrics like IV Rank and IV Percentile, it normalizes the volatility reading into an easy to understand 0-100 score. This allows for a standardized comparison of volatility levels across different assets and time periods.
Why It Matters
A raw IV number is meaningless without context; 40% IV might be extremely high for a utility stock but low for a biotech firm. This pillar provides that context, revealing if market anxiety is historically inflated or suppressed. This is a powerful signal for mean reversion strategies, as volatility tends to revert to its historical average.
How It Works
The analysis begins by collecting the daily Implied Volatility for a specific asset over the last 52 weeks. It then identifies the absolute highest and lowest IV values recorded during that period. Finally, it calculates the current IV's position relative to this high-low range (IV Rank) or compares it against all past daily readings (IV Percentile).
Methodology
IV Rank is calculated as: (Current IV - 52-Week IV Low) / (52-Week IV High - 52-Week IV Low) * 100. IV Percentile is calculated as: (Number of trading days with IV below current IV) / (252 trading days) * 100. The analysis uses a rolling 252-day lookback window with data aggregated at the market close each day.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar quantifies the market's 'fear premium', giving a clear signal for when to sell options (high IV rank) or buy them (low IV rank), an edge most traders without options knowledge overlook.
