Line Combination Chemistry (xGF%)
Quantifying on-ice chemistry for predictive power.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the underlying performance of specific hockey line combinations using the Expected Goals For percentage (xGF%). It reveals which forward lines and defensive pairings are truly dominating play, regardless of short-term luck or goal-scoring variance.
What It Does
The pillar aggregates 5-on-5 on-ice data for specific player groupings that have a significant history of playing together. It calculates their combined Expected Goals For (xGF) and Expected Goals Against (xGA) during that time. The resulting xGF% metric shows whether a line is generating more high-quality chances than it concedes, offering a powerful measure of their effectiveness.
Why It Matters
Team success in hockey is driven by line chemistry, and xGF% is the best public metric to measure it. A line with a high xGF% is statistically likely to outscore its opponents over the long run, providing a strong leading indicator for player performance and game outcomes.
How It Works
First, we identify forward lines and defensive pairings with significant Time on Ice (TOI) together over a recent sample of games. Next, we collect all shot attempts for and against that unit, factoring in shot type and location. An expected goals model is then applied to these shots to calculate xGF and xGA. Finally, we compute the xGF% to rank the unit's control of play.
Methodology
The core calculation is xGF / (xGF + xGA) for a specific player combination during 5-on-5 situations. Data is typically analyzed over a rolling 15-25 game window to capture current performance. The analysis often excludes special teams play to isolate even-strength chemistry, which constitutes the majority of game time.
Edge & Advantage
This metric uncovers lines that are underperforming or overperforming their actual goal totals, creating prediction opportunities before the market adjusts.
Key Indicators
-
Line Combo xGF%
highThe percentage of total expected goals a specific line is responsible for when on the ice at 5-on-5. A value over 50% indicates positive control.
-

mediumCompares a player's performance with a specific teammate versus without them, isolating their unique combined impact.
-
TOI Together
mediumTotal Time on Ice shared by the combination. This establishes the statistical significance and reliability of the xGF% data.
