Long-Term Holder Supply (Institutional Proxy)
Track the conviction of institutional-scale investors.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the crypto supply held by long-term holders, a strong proxy for institutional and high-conviction market participants. It provides a clear signal of accumulation or distribution, filtering out short-term market noise.
What It Does
It calculates the total volume of a cryptocurrency that has not moved on-chain for over one year. This figure is then adjusted by subtracting the known cold storage holdings of major ETFs. This isolates the behavior of organic long-term investors from passive, large-scale fund flows.
Why It Matters
Long-term holders are less sensitive to price volatility and their actions often precede major market trends. A rising LTH supply indicates strong belief and accumulation, suggesting a bullish future, while a decline can signal profit-taking and a potential market top.
How It Works
First, the pillar scans the entire blockchain ledger to identify all unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs). It then filters these UTXOs, keeping only those that have remained dormant for more than 365 days. The total value of these coins is summed, and finally, public data on ETF holdings is subtracted to arrive at the final metric.
Methodology
The core calculation is the sum of coin supply in UTXOs with a lifespan greater than 365 days. The adjustment is made by subtracting the publicly disclosed AUM (Assets Under Management) held in cold storage by spot ETFs like IBIT, FBTC, and GBTC. Data is typically aggregated on a daily basis.
Edge & Advantage
By adjusting for ETF flows, this pillar offers a purer view of active, high-conviction investor sentiment than raw long-term holder metrics.
