Network Utility & Metcalfe Value
Valuing crypto networks based on user activity.
Overview
This pillar analyzes a cryptocurrency's fundamental health by comparing its market capitalization to its on-chain user activity and transaction volume. It helps determine if a network is overvalued or undervalued relative to its actual utility.
What It Does
It applies principles like Metcalfe's Law to crypto assets by tracking daily active addresses and transaction throughput. The pillar's core is the Network Value to Transactions (NVT) ratio, which acts like a P/E ratio for blockchains. By analyzing trends in these on-chain metrics, it generates signals about a network's fundamental strength and price justification.
Why It Matters
In a market driven by speculation, this pillar provides an objective, data-driven anchor for valuation. It helps traders identify critical divergences where price action is not supported by underlying network growth, often signaling a future correction or rally.
How It Works
First, the pillar aggregates daily on-chain data for active addresses and USD-denominated transaction volume for a specific blockchain. It then calculates the NVT ratio by dividing the current market capitalization by the 90-day moving average of transaction volume. Finally, it analyzes the NVT trend and user growth rates to score the network's valuation from 'undervalued' to 'overvalued'.
Methodology
The primary metric is the NVT Ratio, calculated as: Market Capitalization / 90-day Simple Moving Average of Daily On-Chain Transaction Volume (in USD). We also track the 30-day and 90-day growth rate of Daily Active Addresses (DAA). A bullish 'NVT Golden Cross' signal occurs when the 28-day NVT moving average crosses below the 90-day NVT moving average.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar offers a leading indicator of price action, as significant changes in network utility often precede major market moves, providing an edge over lagging technical indicators.
Key Indicators
-
NVT Ratio
highNetwork Value to Transactions Ratio. A high ratio suggests overvaluation, while a low ratio suggests undervaluation.
-
Daily Active Addresses (DAA)
highThe number of unique wallet addresses interacting with the network daily, indicating user growth and adoption.
-
Transaction Count Momentum
mediumThe rate of change in the number of daily transactions, signaling shifts in network activity.
Data Sources
-
Provides comprehensive on-chain intelligence and metrics for major cryptocurrencies.
-
Offers a wide range of on-chain, social, and development metrics for thousands of crypto assets.
-
A platform for user-generated SQL queries and dashboards for public blockchain data.
Example Questions This Pillar Answers
- → Will Bitcoin's NVT ratio fall below 20 by the end of the quarter?
- → Will Ethereum's daily active addresses exceed 1 million for more than 7 consecutive days this month?
- → Is Cardano overvalued based on its on-chain transaction volume relative to its market cap?
