Order Book Imbalance
Quantifying real-time crypto supply and demand.
Overview
This pillar analyzes the live order book for a cryptocurrency, measuring the balance between buy and sell orders. It provides a direct, real-time signal of market pressure that often precedes price movements.
What It Does
The analysis aggregates the total volume of buy orders (bids) and sell orders (asks) within a specific price range, typically 2% of the current spot price. It then calculates the ratio between these two sides to identify imbalances. A heavier bid side indicates strong buying interest, while a heavier ask side signals selling pressure.
Why It Matters
Order book data offers a forward-looking view of market sentiment, unlike lagging indicators that rely on past price action. Identifying significant imbalances, or 'walls', can help predict short-term support and resistance levels, providing a crucial edge in volatile crypto markets.
How It Works
First, the pillar connects to the real-time API data streams of major crypto exchanges. It then continuously sums the monetary value of all bids and asks within a predefined percentage of the mid-price. Finally, it calculates the imbalance ratio and flags any unusually large orders that could influence price.
Methodology
The core metric is the Bid-Ask Depth Ratio, calculated as (Total Bid Volume within 2% Depth) / (Total Ask Volume within 2% Depth). Data is aggregated across at least three major exchanges (e.g., Binance, Coinbase, Kraken) and refreshed every 10-15 seconds. Orders larger than 10 standard deviations from the mean order size are flagged as 'walls'.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar reveals the market's hidden intent by analyzing raw supply and demand, giving you a signal of potential price direction before it becomes obvious on a chart.
