Outlook Revision Momentum
Track management's confidence before the market does.
Overview
Analyzes the trend and velocity of changes in a company's official financial guidance. This provides a powerful leading indicator of future earnings performance and potential stock price movements.
What It Does
This pillar systematically aggregates and scores all forward-looking guidance revisions issued by a company's management over the past twelve months. It quantifies the direction, magnitude, and frequency of these changes to create a momentum score. This score reveals whether management's outlook is consistently improving or deteriorating.
Why It Matters
Management holds the most accurate, non-public information about their business's health. Consistent revisions to their public outlook signal underlying business trends before they appear in official earnings reports, offering a significant predictive edge.
How It Works
First, we collect all official guidance updates from SEC filings and earnings call transcripts. Each revision is then classified as positive, negative, or neutral and weighted by its recency. These weighted revisions are used to calculate a 'Raise/Lower Ratio' and a composite momentum score over a trailing twelve-month window. A score consistently above 1.0 indicates positive momentum.
Methodology
The core metric is the TTM Outlook Revision Ratio, calculated as: (Sum of Weighted Positive Revisions) / (Sum of Weighted Negative Revisions). Revisions are weighted using an exponential decay model with a 90-day half-life. Positive or negative classification is based on changes to consensus midpoint estimates for key metrics like Revenue, EPS, and Capex.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar captures the 'second derivative' of company performance, revealing the acceleration of management sentiment which is often missed by static analyst ratings.
