Pace of Play & Tempo

Quantifying game speed to predict scoring opportunities.

4.1s Pace Differential vs Opponent

Overview

This pillar analyzes how fast college football teams run their offenses, measuring seconds per play and play volume. It provides a crucial edge for predicting total points and game flow, moving beyond simple points-per-game stats.

What It Does

It calculates the average time a team takes between snaps, both overall and in specific situations like standard downs versus passing downs. The pillar then projects the total number of offensive plays for each team in an upcoming game by adjusting for the opponent's pace. This creates a data-driven forecast of game tempo.

Why It Matters

A faster pace means more plays, which translates to more chances for both teams to score, gain yards, or commit turnovers. This pillar uncovers mismatches in tempo that markets often overlook, providing a significant edge in predicting over/under totals and player statistical output.

How It Works

First, the system ingests play-by-play data for every game. It then calculates the average seconds per play for each team's offense, filtering out non-standard plays like special teams or end-of-half kneel downs. These individual pace metrics are then combined and adjusted for the upcoming opponent to project a total play count for the game.

Methodology

The core calculation is Adjusted Pace, derived from a team's Seconds Per Play (SPP) on offense and its opponent's SPP on defense, using a rolling 5-game weighted average. The formula is: Projected Plays = (Team A Offensive SPP + Team B Defensive SPP) / 2. This is then multiplied by the expected game time in seconds to forecast total plays. Neutral situation pace (first three quarters, score within 14 points) is weighted more heavily.

Edge & Advantage

This provides an edge by focusing on the volume of opportunities, not just scoring efficiency, identifying games likely to be much higher or lower scoring than public perception suggests.

Key Indicators

  • Seconds Per Play

    high

The average time elapsed between the start of consecutive offensive plays for a team.

  • Plays Per Game

    high

The total number of offensive snaps a team averages per game, indicating overall volume.

  • Standard Downs Pace

    medium

A team's pace specifically on first and second downs, showing their baseline tempo before pressure.
