Partner Dependency Rating
How much does a star player's partner really matter?
Overview
This pillar quantifies a pickleball player's performance drop-off when they compete without their primary partner. It's essential for predicting outcomes in tournaments with new or temporary pairings, where market odds are often based on reputation alone.
What It Does
The Partner Dependency Rating analyzes a player's match history to establish a baseline performance with their main partner. It then compares this to their performance with a variety of other, often lower-ranked, partners. The resulting score highlights how much a player's success is tied to a specific teammate versus their own individual skill.
Why It Matters
In doubles sports, synergy can be more valuable than raw talent. This pillar provides a data-driven edge by identifying players who are likely overvalued due to a strong partner, allowing for smarter positions on matches featuring unfamiliar team compositions.
How It Works
First, we identify a player's primary partner based on match frequency over the last 12 months. We then calculate key performance metrics like win rate and point differential for that pairing. Next, we calculate the same metrics for all matches played with other partners. The dependency rating is the percentage decrease in performance observed when the player is without their primary partner.
Methodology
The core formula is Dependency Score = 1 - (Weighted Performance with Alternate Partners / Weighted Performance with Primary Partner). The performance metric is a weighted average: (Win Rate * 0.6) + (Average Point Differential per Game * 0.4). The analysis uses a rolling 12-month window of PPA and APP tour data. A 'primary partner' is defined as the most frequent partner in the last 6 months, provided they are ranked in the top 20.
Edge & Advantage
The market often misprices odds for new pairings based on individual player rankings. This pillar finds value by quantifying the hidden variable of partner synergy, or lack thereof.
