Pass Rush Win Rate vs Sack Rate
Winning in the trenches beyond the box score.
Overview
Analyzes the critical one on one battle between pass rushers and offensive tackles. This pillar goes beyond simple sack counts to identify dominant players who consistently generate pressure, offering a truer measure of defensive impact.
What It Does
This pillar evaluates the individual matchup between an EDGE rusher and an Offensive Tackle using advanced metrics. It contrasts a player's Pass Rush Win Rate, which measures beating a blocker within 2.5 seconds, against their raw sack totals. The goal is to identify players who create consistent disruption, a more stable predictor of performance than the often noisy sack statistic.
Why It Matters
Sack totals can be misleading, often influenced by coverage, QB release time, and luck. By focusing on win rate, this pillar provides a more accurate assessment of a player's true skill and future potential to impact a game, offering an edge in player prop and spread markets.
How It Works
First, we gather player specific data from sources like Pro Football Focus for both the EDGE rusher and their opposing Offensive Tackle. Next, we compare the rusher's Pass Rush Win Rate against the tackle's Pass Blocking Win Rate. Finally, we calculate a Matchup Advantage Score that highlights potential mismatches and predicts the likelihood of consistent pressure from that specific matchup.
Methodology
The core calculation is the Matchup Advantage Score (MAS). MAS = (EDGE Rusher's PFF Pass Rush Win Rate %) minus (Offensive Tackle's PFF Pass Block Win Rate %). The analysis focuses on 'true pass sets', excluding screens, play action, and rollouts for a cleaner signal. A 3 game rolling average is used to weight recent performance.
Edge & Advantage
This provides a significant edge by identifying undervalued pass rushers who generate high pressure but have low sack totals, and overvalued tackles who benefit from scheme.
