RB Usage & Opportunity Share
Quantifying a running back's true workload.
Overview
This pillar analyzes a running back's share of their team's offensive opportunities, including rush attempts and targets. It provides a clear view of a player's role and volume, which are leading indicators for on-field production.
What It Does
It calculates the percentage of a team's total carries and targets that a specific running back receives. By also incorporating snap share and high-value touches like red zone opportunities, it builds a comprehensive picture of a player's involvement in the offense. This moves beyond simple box scores to measure true offensive role.
Why It Matters
Opportunity is the primary driver of fantasy and real-world production for running backs. This pillar helps identify players poised for a breakout game based on increasing usage, or those at risk of decline, even before their stat lines reflect it.
How It Works
First, we collect game-by-game data for team rush attempts, pass attempts, and offensive snaps. Second, we gather individual player stats for rushes, targets, and snaps played. The pillar then calculates the player's percentage share of each category over a rolling 3-game window to identify trends. Finally, it weights high-value touches, like those in the red zone, to create a final opportunity score.
Methodology
The core metric is Opportunity Share, calculated as (Player Rush Attempts + Player Targets) / (Team Rush Attempts + Team Pass Attempts) over a rolling 3-game average. Red Zone touches (inside the 20-yard line) are weighted 1.5x in a separate 'High-Value Touch' index. Snap Share is calculated as Player Snaps / Team Offensive Snaps.
Edge & Advantage
It provides a forward-looking measure of potential production, giving an edge over traders who only react to past yardage and touchdown totals.
