Red Zone Efficiency (Finishing Drives)
Quantifying which teams finish drives with points.
Overview
This pillar analyzes offensive and defensive efficiency inside the opponent's 40-yard line, a critical area for scoring. It provides a more accurate measure of a team's ability to convert opportunities than traditional yardage stats.
What It Does
The pillar calculates 'Points per Scoring Opportunity' for both offense and defense. It identifies every drive that crosses the opponent's 40-yard line and tracks the outcome. This reveals which teams capitalize on good field position and which defenses stiffen when it matters most.
Why It Matters
Yardage totals can be misleading; this pillar shows a team's true scoring prowess and defensive resilience under pressure. It provides a significant edge in predicting game totals and outcomes in close matchups where finishing drives is the deciding factor.
How It Works
First, we parse play-by-play data to isolate all offensive drives that enter the opponent's 40-yard line. Next, we calculate the total points scored on those specific drives. The system then divides total points by the number of opportunities to get an efficiency rating for both offense and defense, comparing the two teams in an upcoming game.
Methodology
The core metric is Points per Eckel (PPE), calculated by dividing total points scored on drives reaching the opponent's 40-yard line by the number of such drives. Analysis uses a rolling 6-game window, with the two most recent games weighted 1.5x to emphasize current form. Opponent adjustments are applied based on the defensive PPE ratings of past opponents.
Edge & Advantage
It identifies teams whose scoring ability is mispriced by markets focused on total yards, revealing hidden value in over/under and spread bets.
