Strokes Gained: Approach (SG:APP)
Quantifying the iron play that wins tournaments.
Overview
This pillar analyzes a player's performance on approach shots, the single most predictive statistic for winning golf tournaments. It measures how many strokes a player gains or loses on the field by evaluating the quality of their shots into the green.
What It Does
Strokes Gained: Approach isolates a golfer's performance on any shot not from the tee on a Par 4 or 5, that ends up on or around the green. It compares the starting and ending location of the ball to the PGA Tour average, calculating a precise value for the quality of that single shot. This data is then aggregated over recent rounds to establish a player's current form with their irons.
Why It Matters
Approach play has the highest correlation to tournament success, far exceeding driving or putting. A player consistently gaining strokes on approach is creating more birdie opportunities and avoiding difficult recovery shots, giving them a significant statistical edge over the field.
How It Works
The model begins with the shot's starting position and the tour average strokes needed to hole out from there. After the player hits, it measures the ending position and the new average strokes to hole out. The Strokes Gained value is the starting average minus the ending average, minus the one shot taken. This process is repeated for every approach shot and averaged over a specific number of rounds.
Methodology
The core formula is SG:APP = AvgStrokes(StartPosition) - AvgStrokes(EndPosition) - 1. The analysis utilizes a rolling 24-round window, giving more weight to recent events. It specifically filters for shots outside 50 yards from the hole that are not tee shots on Par 4s or 5s.
Edge & Advantage
This pillar moves beyond simple 'Greens in Regulation' stats to quantify the true quality of a player's iron play, identifying elite ball-strikers before the market fully prices in their form.
